GENDER of Game Players
Women 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the
game-playing population (30%) than boys age 17 or younger (18%)
Except this lets you customize your character, have a big effect on how he will look and play. You can’t do that with books, so your metaphor doesn’t work here. I’m not saying give a gender option in Assassin’s Creed IV or Mirror’s Edge.
The gap between Polygon staff and its readers is so wide it actually makes me sad.
“What if it is crucial for the game story that the main character is a male?”
“It is their game, their intellectual property, so they can do whatever it is that they want with it.”
“I don’t see why there would be a problem with someone making a game with a male protagonist”
Do you even hear yourself? Seriously? If we don’t ask for things, even the most simple things, we won’t EVER get them. Having a character creator and not having the option of choosing a gender is stupid and lazy. The game never even attempted to present itself as some sort of exploration of what being male means or anything like that. Half of gamers are women, why shouldn’t most games let you play as one, especially when it’s the kind of game that lets you make your own character a la Dark Souls (which has gender options by the way).
My love for Just Cause 2 is beyond words. Only Plante understands it.
