Totally agree with you. I play Dota 2 and I’m blown away by Valve’s commitment to that community. I’ve spent some money on Dota 2 (items, tournament tickets) that were entirely motivated out of my love and enjoyment of that game, not my frustration, anger, obsession, score-chasing, completion-ist/OCD tendencies. And not because I was nagged to spend, or felt my enjoyment was limited if I didn’t spend. It was pure appreciation. I have absolutely no problem with a company monetizing a game that way… but it has to be a solid game in the first place for that to work.
