The death of couch co-op is the saddest of all. There’s nothing like sitting on a couch with 3 buds and playing melee.
You’re missing the fact that selling game consoles is the majority of the profit for Nintendo. Right now, they may be losing money, but the potential profit from a successful game console (see Wii, they make billions of dollars. At one point they were more profitable than Japanese car giants like Honda and Toyota) is FAR higher than the profit from a successful game.
Giving that up turns Nintendo into a MUCH smaller company – who knows if the insane talent that they have would even stay. Sega is certainly a completely different company now.
What are you even saying? You went from complaining about innovation to complaining about the characters in each game. Do you really think that new characters should count as innovation?
The innovation comes in the gameplay. Nintendo reuses characters because they have established brand value. Sure, you could release Mario Golf with all new characters, but it will sell better as a Mario game.
Plus, Peach and Daisy have been playable characters in MANY of Nintendo’s party games. They’ve been available in the Smash series (Daisy as a separate costume), all of the sports series, the party titles, and Mario Kart.
NSMB is not part of the main franchise. Galaxy 2 was released after NSMB Wii. Super Mario 3D World is the newest game in the main series. I haven’t played it, but Super Mario 3D Land was a blast and without a doubt the best handheld mario experience ever.
Secondly, have you ever played NSMB with 3 friends? It’s a fucking blast.
