Hulk, Tinkerbell and a flying bed make Disney Infinity's 'Toy Box' a whole lot weirder

Disney Infinity 2.0 may still be seen as a kids' game, primarily — but it will also let you put Tinkerbell and The Incredible Hulk in bed together. "That's the bed from Bedknobs and Broomsticks," said John Vignocchi, the game's executive producer, just so we were both clear. It's a vehicle, OK, in Disney Infinity's "Toy Box" mode, where gamers take all of their virtual toys and play with them together, regardless of what continuity or movie or product line they come from. (Bedknobs and Broomsticks was a Mary Poppins clone from 1971 starring Angela Lansbury. It featured a flying bed.) Disney Infinity is the latest money-printer in the toys-to-life genre, in which players bring heroes and other characters into the game by stacking a cool little figurine on a special controller. Wii version of Skylanders Trap Team bundled with Wii U download code

The Wii version of Skylanders Trap Team will include a download code for the Wii U version, effectively creating a cross-buy benefit for the toys-to-life game coming soon from Activision. Skylanders' official Twitter feed pointed out the bonus on Wednesday, meaning that those who buy the game on Wii won't have to buy a new set (at $75) if they upgrade to Wii U. Those who have both consoles may wish to consider this even if the Wii U will be the primary option. Only the software is different; the physical toys and the portal they use are the same for both consoles. Skylanders Trap Team launches Oct. 5 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One and 3DS. There will be a "Dark Edition" collectors pack that allows players to play as the series' main villain, Portal...

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham's Comic-Con trailer shows the Justice League in action

Warner Bros. shared a new Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham trailer in honor of San Diego Comic-Con this week, and boy there sure are a lot of super heroes in this game! The trailer above shows the famous Justice League in action against Batman's nemesis the Joker and a legion of other baddies hailing from the DC Comics universe. Of course, everything has been given that special Lego games-flavored brand of humor, so while the situation may look dire, it's not too dire for a few silly jokes. In addition to getting hands-on time with the game at Comic-Con this week, attendees of the show can stop by the LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham panel on Sunday, July 27 at 1 p.m. PT and get posters signed by the game's voice actors at 2:30 in the DC Comics booth. Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham will launch...

Want to win the console war? Here's how

Isn't it about time the console companies finally figured out the big, big secret about making a successful games console? You and I know this secret, but if the likes of Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony understand it, they seem to let it slip their minds from time to time. The trick is to make something that people want to buy; not something that companies want to sell. The trick is to make sure that you are selling games consoles and not high-falutin' super-boxes. Undoubtedly, Xbox One was launched as something that its creators wanted to sell, rather than something an appropriately sizeable number of people wanted to buy. Must Read Why you should wait before buying a new console Microsoft spent much of 2013 telling anyone who would listen that Xbox One was more than a...

Up to half of Redbox game rentals translate into game sales (update)

An increasing number of people are streaming and downloading video games, but this doesn't mean the end for physical goods, nor does it spell trouble for game rentals — that's according to Redbox's director of video games, Ryan Calnan. Redbox currently has automated rental kiosks for DVDs, Blu-ray discs and video games at more than 35,000 locations across North America and offers game rentals for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Select markets also offer games from the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U. During the company's first quarter for this year it topped 200 million rentals, of which video games accounted for two percent. While this number may seem small, Calnan told Polygon it's actually a big deal for the games industry. "We have a 20-50 percent conversion rate...

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time favorites join the Hyrule Warriors roster

The roster of Nintendo and Tecmo Koei's Zelda-themed hack-and-slash Hyrule Warriors is three more strong today, with Sheik, Darunia and Princess Ruto added to the ranks, according to Famitsu. Warning: Some spoilers for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ahead! All three characters first made appearances in 1998 Nintendo 64 title The Ocarina of Time. Darunia is the leader of the stony, mountain-dwelling Goron race, while Ruto is the headstrong young princess of the waterbound Zora people. Sheik's presence in Hyrule Warriors is interesting, as in Ocarina of Time Sheik is the alter-ego disguise for Princess Zelda. Sheik has been included as a fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series since 2001's Super Smash Bros. Melee, but as a completely separate fighter from Zelda. Sheik's gender...

In the face of recent wins, Nintendo's lack of online functions is no longer forgivable

Nintendo is a company that, for better or worse, is completely blind to the trends and innovations of the gaming world around it. This allows the company to make interesting and bold leaps with its software and hardware, but it also means that Nintendo is often laughably behind the rest of the gaming world when it comes to basic features. Small steps are being made to fix this issue, but the baffling lack of competitive online or account-based features make the Wii U feel like a prior-generation console. At this point we're not mad at Nintendo, just disappointed. Especially after the release of games like Mario Kart 8 that help breathe new life in the hardware, and a wonderful slate of games shown at E3. The problem A recent update to the Wii U allows you to move your content to...

Kickstarter suspends Ex-STALKER devs' Areal campaign, West Games turns to direct funding

Areal, the game pitched as a colorful, open-world post-apocalyptic adventure from "senior ex-S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers," found success on Kickstarter, but now the project has been suspended and all pledges have been canceled. According to a message sent to Kickstarter backers today, "A review of the project uncovered evidence that it broke Kickstarter's rules." Now the developer has turned to direct funding through its own website in an effort to finance Areal. The suspension of Areal's Kickstarter hit with less than 48 hours to go in its fundraising campaign. The developer, West Games, had raised nearly $65,000, well beyond its original $50,000 fundraising goal. Kickstarter doesn't disclose why it suspends campaigns, but said it will take such action if campaigns misrepresent or...

Find out which experimental games excite Korean devs

Note: A few frames of the above video are not suitable for work. A group of Korean game developers were inspired by GDC's Experimental Gameplay Workshop to host their own curated games exhibition. The festival, called Out of Index, opened for submissions June 22nd and just a short month later the games were demonstrated at a small party in South Korea. "People say ‘There is nothing new under the sun,'" reads OOI's mission statement. "Does that mean there wouldn't be any new grammar [of gameplay] then? No! "We would like to inspire new energy to the Korean game industry through various experimentation [sic]." The showcase featured 14 games, including Western games like David OReilly's Mountain. Check out the video for the highlights. You can find information, including videos, about...

Nintendo has officially adopted the Luigi Death Stare

No one is immune to the lure of the Luigi Death Stare, it seems, as Mario Kart 8's latest Japanese commercial capitalizes on the meme in a rather dramatic way. We're pretty sure the chorus chanting in the background is warbling some wordless version of ballad "Danny Boy" or the inspirational tune "You Raise Me Up," which makes complete sense in advertising the latest Mario-themed kart racer. You've got your gliders, your shells knocking people into the air, the feeling of mounting despair as your race progress is ground a halt and Luigi's cold, dead eyes punctuate your failure with a glare that could curdle milk. Luigi's Death Stare is everywhere. All of YouTube and the dedicated Mario Kart TV clip-sharing channel, fan conventions (this cosplay is pretty amazing) and Tumblr. If you're...

Wii U owners can now transfer their data to another Wii U

A new software update for Wii U was released today, giving owners of Nintendo's current console the ability to transfer their content from one Wii U to another. The Wii U to Wii U system transfer works similarly to the process utilized by Nintendo on 3DS. Wii U owners must have both consoles up to date with the latest system software (version 5.1.0) and once the transfer from system to system is complete, the source Wii U will have its storage formatted. Wii U owners will be able to transfer users, Nintendo Network IDs, save data and downloaded content to a new system. Details on the system transfer and step-by-step instructions are available at Nintendo's support website. The newly released system update for Wii U also adds another welcome feature: the option to navigate the eShop...

Survey hints at Harmonix getting the (Rock) Band back together

Harmonix is asking gamers how excited they'd be for a return of Rock Band to the current console generation — PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox One — in a survey that furthers the impression the rhythm game pioneers are serious about getting the Band back together. The survey doesn't give up any specific ideas Harmonix may have; it asks them how often they continue to play the legacy game, how many peripherals they still own, and the platform on which they play. Taken alongside recent remarks by Harmonix chief creative officer Alex Rigopulos, it sounds like they're eyeballing the PS4, Wii U and Xbox One. In June, Rigopulos told GamesBeat that Harmonix views the Rock Band franchise as "something we'll return to at the right point in time, and reimagine it as appropriate for its time." Earlier...

Wii U owners will be able to make eShop payments with an NFC card … in Japan

Japanese Wii U owners will be able to make eShop payments using the GamePad's NFC capabilities beginning July 22, Nintendo announced today. Payments will work with the Sucia rechargeable smart cards, which are used primarily to pay train fares. Tapping a Sucia card on the lower left of the GamePad will let customers bypass the requirement to use a credit card or add funds through the eShop. In its May 7 fiscal earnings report, Nintendo reiterated its desire to provide software that uses the Wii U's NFC capabilities, including a line of Skylanders-like NFC figurines. Games like Mario Party 10 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will use Nintendo's amiibo characters. For more on amiibos, be sure to read our report from E3 2014 and watch the video below.
