Costume Quest 2's tricky twins are back on their beat

Double Fine released a PAX trailer for Costume Quest 2 today, and announced an exclusive costume offer for anyone who pre-orders the game on Steam. Coming to Windows PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Wii U this October, the creepy turn-based combat and exploration game puts players in control of twins Reynold and Wren as they set off on a trick or treating adventure. They'll fight evil characters in Halloween costumes that grant them superhuman powers. "It's probably our most requested sequel, besides Psychonauts," said Double Fine's Greg Rice in a recent Polygon interview. "People have been asking for it forever. I think it's that every Halloween you're reminded about the game. We have a lot of people who are coming back to us saying they replay it...

Nintendo amiibo figurines available for preorder, priced at $12.99

Nintendo today opened up preorders for its line of amiibo figurines, with a suggested retail price of $12.99 and a delivery date of holiday 2014. The first dozen characters available will be iconic Nintendo characters; Mario, Peach, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, Kirby, Fox, Marth, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer. Amiibos are Nintendo-themed miniatures embedded with near field communication chips. When placed near a Wii U the figures will be able to communicate with the console and contribute unique functionality to various Nintendo games. Similar technology has been in use for several years already with the wildly popular Skylanders series and Disney Infinity, which is now entering its second iteration. Unlike other NFC figurine systems, Nintendos amiibos will be...

Ultimate NES Remix bringing 8-bit mash-ups to 3DS on Dec. 5

Ultimate NES Remix, the next installment in Nintendo's bizarre series of NES-era mini-game compilations, will launch on Nintendo 3DS Dec. 5 both on the eShop and at retail for $29.99, the company announced today. Two NES Remix titles have launched on Wii U to date, challenging players to complete increasingly difficult timed challenges in classic titles like Super Mario Bros. 2, Dr. Mario and more. The games also included "Remixed" versions of those games, in which characters from one franchise found their way into another — among other bizarre mutations. Ultimate NES Remix will follow that formula, and will include challenges from 16 8-bit titles. Ultimate NES Remix will also include online leaderboards, letting players measure their best scores against those in their region. It will...

Super Smash Bros. leaked roster seemingly confirmed by Nintendo announcement

Today Nintendo announced Shulk, the protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles, will be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U. The announcement lends more credit to last week's leak of what may be the roster of characters in the upcoming fighting game. In the leaked footage, Shulk appeared to fight in the Nintendo 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. Those leaked videos were shutdown by a Nintendo of America. Inc. copyright claim. Shulk's announcement comes at the beginning of the following Nintendo Direct video.

Narrative exploration game Gone Home is coming to Wii U

Experimental narrative game Gone Home is coming to Wii U, Nintendo of America senior manager of licensing and marketing Damon Baker revealed during a presentation at Unite 2014. Confirmation of the Wii U release was made as part of a discussion on future Unity Engine based titles on the Nintendo system. "We've got tons of titles that are also confirmed and coming out in the near future, things like The Swapper, things like Gone Home, so we're really excited about the level of Unity support that we're receiving on the platform," said Baker. We've reached out to the developer for further details. Earlier in the year it was confirmed that Gone Home would be headed to consoles this fall, without specifying which exact systems. The Fullbright Company, developer of Polygon's 2013 Game of...

Nintendo finally solves the problem of everyone wanting to play Yoshi

The brutal battles over who gets to be Yoshi in Mario Kart are done, thanks to new color palette swaps in Mario Kart 8. YouTube user gameonion uploaded a video of the eight new color palette swaps for Yoshi and Shy Guy — including pink, blue and orange — that you can watch above. The new colors are available immediately to players who pre-order both of the game's upcoming DLC packs, which incorporate non-Mario universe characters into the main series of the kart-racing franchise for the first time ever. In November, players can download a pack that adds The Legend of Zelda's Link, cat-suit Peach and Tanooki-suit Mario. The second pack, due in May 2015, includes Isabelle from Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the skeletal Dry Bowser and the Animal Crossing villager. Both DLC packs, priced at...

Miyamoto signals Nintendo desire to focus on hardcore

One of Nintendo's mantras, for the past three decades, has been the desirability of expanding gaming into every corner of popular culture. But in a new interview published this week by Edge magazine, the company's talismanic creative leader Shigeru Miyamoto signals a strong desire to appeal to highly engaged consumers, aka the hardcore. In an unusually frank answer, Miyamoto seems to almost dismiss casual gamers. "[These are] the sort of people who, for example, might want to watch a movie. They might want to go to Disneyland," he said. "Their attitude is, 'okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.' It's kind of a passive attitude they're taking, and to me it's kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to...

Link, F-Zero and Animal Crossing are coming to Mario Kart 8 as DLC

The Mario Kart franchise has always been about racing with characters from the Mario universe — until now. With two upcoming downloadable content packs, Mario Kart 8 players will be able to add The Legend of Zelda's Link and the villager and Isabelle from Animal Crossing, according to a post from Nintendo's official UK store. The first pack of the two adds Link, cat-suit Peach and tanooki-suit Mario, as well as four vehicles and eight tracks. It will be available in November of this year. Pack 2, available in May 2015, adds Animal Crossing's Villager, Isabelle from Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the skeletal Dry Bowser, four vehicles and eight tracks. "Each Add On Content pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses, which, in total, increases the number of available courses...

Woman says Wii dancing game saved her life

Britain's Daily Mail tabloid can usually be relied upon to run stories that are hostile to video games, revealing the "chilling truth" behind hit games and their "morally immature" imprint on young minds. But today, the newspaper is running a story about a woman who credits playing a Nintendo Wii game, with saving her life. Late last year, Emma White (36) was playing a Wii dancing game with her kids, on her daughter's birthday, when she suffered a loss of bladder control. Never having experienced incontinence before, she checked in with a doctor. After tests, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. "On my daughter's birthday, it's a tradition for our family to have a dance off on the Wii," she said. "I'd never had any accidents before so it was a complete shock." The Mail is running...

Caped crusader goes kinda nuts in new Lego Batman 3 trailer

A new trailer for TT Games' Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham today shows Batman in a freaky frenzy over his little buddy Robin. There's no explanation about the dark knight's weird behavior, but we do know that many characters in this game are subverted by evil Brainiac as he seeks to take over the world. It just so happens that this trailer is almost entirely focused on Brainiac and his incredible shrinking device, but we also get a song and dance routine from Joker. Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham will be released on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Wii U, 3DS and Windows PC this fall

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare isn't coming to Wii U

This year's Call of Duty is skipping the Wii U, developer Sledgehammer Games confirmed today. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was announced in May for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC, with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions confirmed later. Sledgehammer Games is focusing its efforts on developing the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions, with an unconfirmed studio handling development on previous generation platforms. Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey said today that there won't be a Wii U version of the game, which he explained on Twitter was "an Activision decision." In previous years, Activision confirmed Call of Duty games for Nintendo platforms well after announcing each year's entry. The Wii version of Modern Warfare 3 was announced in Aug. 2011, months after other...

Watch Dogs will be 'the only mature game' Ubisoft publishes for Wii U

Ubisoft will shift its focus when it comes to publishing games for Nintendo's Wii U. While the company will continue to release types of games that are already doing well — like the Just Dance franchise — it will back away from more mature titles. Speaking with Game Informer, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that Watch Dogs for Wii U will likely be the last mature game published for the console. One of the reasons for this is the poor reception for Assassin's Creed games on Wii U. Both Assassin's Creed 3 and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag received Wii U versions, but neither game appears to have done as well as the Just Dance games. "What we see is that they are very interested in Just Dance, very interested by other kinds of games," Guillemot said. "So what we are trying to do is to...

Night Trap Kickstarter slams Nintendo; applies for Nintendo license

The Night Trap Kickstarter soap opera took another twist yesterday, with organizer Tom Zito lashing out at Nintendo in a lengthy update, while pledging to apply to that same company for a Wii U release of the game, as a potential stretch goal. Zito's blog post (which includes a host of surprising anecdotes from gaming's past) recounts his animosity towards Nintendo due to an episode 20 years ago, when the original Night Trap, a schlocky horror game, was the subject of media and federal scrutiny into the game industry. He wrote that Nintendo's then management had thrown Zito and his team under the bus by creating a reel of Night Trap, which was then on the Sega CD, and presenting the footage to a U.S Senate hearing. Night Trap was subsequently withdrawn from sale. "Through its...
