Two Ubisoft developers watched a goat sacrifice while researching Far Cry 4

Two Ubisoft developers journeyed to Nepal to research the inspiration for Kyrat, the fictitious Himalayan setting for Far Cry 4, and while there they ended up observing the ritual sacrifice of a goat. The scene plays out in this, part one of a documentary filmed by Vice Media and shown at a Far Cry 4 panel at Comic-Con 2014. It happens off camera at 4:05 but it might make some uncomfortable. Mark Thompson, the game's narrative director, and Phil Fournier, the associate producer, made the journey with Vice's Krishna Andavolu. (Vice and Ubisoft also collaborated on a pirate-history documentary to promote Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.) When they arrived in Kathmandu, they caught a rumor there was to be an animal sacrifice, and they found the event. It was a sacrifice of thanks a man...

Far Cry 4's director details how its free multiplayer trial will work

The creative director for Far Cry 4 explained how the game will let those who don't own the game participate for free in co-operative multiplayer with a friend who does. Originally discussed at E3, Far Cry 4 will give buyers of the game 10 codes to give to friends. That downloads enough of the game to play online in Far Cry 4's open world with the friend (but not in campaign missions). Asked how long the code would last, Alex Hutchinson didn't give the Comic-Con 2014 panel a specific timespan, but it will depend on the friend who owns the game being online. "The inspiration came from the Super Nintendo days, and the way you tried out games then was to go to a buddy's house and sit on his couch and play," Hutchinson said. "How long you got to play depended on how long his mom let you...

Report: Walmart canceling Destiny Ghost Edition pre-orders 'due to a supply issue'

Walmart is canceling pre-orders of the Ghost Edition of Destiny and replacing them with the cheaper Limited Edition, according to a post on NeoGAF. A NeoGAF member posted what appears to be a screenshot of an email from Walmart to a customer who pre-ordered Destiny's Ghost Edition on PlayStation 4. The $149.99 package includes a replica of a Ghost (the player's companion robot), a letter of introduction from developer Bungie and "relics" from the Golden Age of Destiny's fiction. "Unfortunately, due to a supply issue, we will be unable to fulfill [your order]," the email reads. "We would like to offer you a substitution with the Limited Edition, which is a comparable item." Destiny's Limited Edition, which does not contain the aforementioned goodies but comes with everything else in...

Is Sniper Elite 3 the first shooter that is boring on purpose?

Shortly after Rebellion Entertainment completing Sniper Elite 3, Jason Kingsley, the studio’s CEO and creative director, brought the game home to let his partner have a look at it. They have both visited firing ranges, and she’s a good shot in real life, he says, so he figured she might enjoy it.One evening, as she began a new mission, Kingsley got up, went to the kitchen, made a pot of tea, poured himself a cup and returned to the living room. She hadn't shot anyone. She hadn't even moved. "I said, ‘What are you doing?'; she said, ‘I'm listening and watching,'" Kingsley recalled. "I said, ‘It's been 12 minutes! You've actually — I've made a cup of tea — I've come back in and you're still in the same place! "And she said, ‘Well, yes, I'm just being very careful,'" Kingsley said. The...

Up to half of Redbox game rentals translate into game sales (update)

An increasing number of people are streaming and downloading video games, but this doesn't mean the end for physical goods, nor does it spell trouble for game rentals — that's according to Redbox's director of video games, Ryan Calnan. Redbox currently has automated rental kiosks for DVDs, Blu-ray discs and video games at more than 35,000 locations across North America and offers game rentals for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Select markets also offer games from the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U. During the company's first quarter for this year it topped 200 million rentals, of which video games accounted for two percent. While this number may seem small, Calnan told Polygon it's actually a big deal for the games industry. "We have a 20-50 percent conversion rate...

Find out which experimental games excite Korean devs

Note: A few frames of the above video are not suitable for work. A group of Korean game developers were inspired by GDC's Experimental Gameplay Workshop to host their own curated games exhibition. The festival, called Out of Index, opened for submissions June 22nd and just a short month later the games were demonstrated at a small party in South Korea. "People say ‘There is nothing new under the sun,'" reads OOI's mission statement. "Does that mean there wouldn't be any new grammar [of gameplay] then? No! "We would like to inspire new energy to the Korean game industry through various experimentation [sic]." The showcase featured 14 games, including Western games like David OReilly's Mountain. Check out the video for the highlights. You can find information, including videos, about...

Battlefield Hardline delayed to 2015

Battlefield Hardline has been delayed to early 2015, Electronic Arts announced today, saying that the development teams want to spend more time developing the game to ultimately deliver a better product. "Back at E3, we launched a beta for Hardline — we wanted to not only show you the game, but to let you play it for yourselves," Karl Magnus Troedsson, DICE vice president and group GM, wrote on the Battlefield blog. "Millions of you jumped in and had a great time. As a result, the Visceral Games team learned a lot from players about what they wanted in the game. We've been pouring over the data and feedback, and have already been putting a lot of it right into the game and sharing it directly with you. "This feedback also spurred us to start thinking about other possibilities and...

Dragon Age: Inquisition delayed to Nov. 18

Dragon Age: Inquisition, the upcoming role-playing title from BioWare, has been delayed and is now set for release Nov. 18 in North America and Nov. 21 in Europe, the studio announced today. Publisher Electronic Arts had originally set the release date for Oct. 7, so the new date represents a delay of six weeks. In an open letter on the game's website, executive producer Mark Darrah said, "While this extra few weeks may not seem like a lot, I know the game you'll play will be all the better for it." Darrah added, "This last bit of time is about polishing the experience we want you to see. Ensuring that our open spaces are as engaging as possible. Strengthening the emotional impact of the Hero's choices. And ensuring the experience you get is the best it can be in the platform you...

Walking Dead's momentum leads to this violent, brutal, shocking moment

The video above contains major spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 2: Episode 4, as well as some very intense violence. If either of those things concern you, you'd best click out of this story right away and don't read further.Last chance before we get into spoiler country! All gone? Okay. Early into "Amid the Ruins," Clementine is forced to kill a zombie up close and personal. This isn't shocking in and of itself. Clem has murdered lots of zombies throughout the season. What makes this especially harsh is that she's essentially "putting down" the zombified form of Nick, one of the companions she's been traveling with for a couple of episodes now. It's worth noting that it's possible to never see this scene. If Nick has died earlier in your playthrough of Season 2, he won't show...

The Walking Dead Season 2: Episode 4 review: existential crisis

Everyone you know and love will one day die. It's true for all of us, but Telltale's Walking Dead series — now nearing the end of its second season — has always done an especially powerful job of putting mortality at the forefront. In "Amid the Ruins," Season 2's fourth episode, that tension at the heart of the series is as loud and clear as it's ever been. Every moment of hope is contrasted by a devastating setback. Longtime companions fall before the episode is done, and protagonist Clementine finds herself in increasingly dire situations. This formula has done Telltale well in the past, but something is off in "Amid the Ruins." The normally brilliant characterization and writing of the series is less consistent. The plodding arc of the episode feels as exhausted and hopeless as...

College football players want the NCAA Football video game back as much as you do

If you're bummed that EA Sports killed its NCAA Football series, know that the college football players it featured are bummed out, too. A few said they don't want money from any legal settlement — they just want the game back. EA Sports ended its long-running college series last September to settle lawsuits brought by former players — which became a class action involving current players — over the uncompensated use of their likenesses in the series. This particular case highlights the debate over the NCAA's amateurism rules, in that even if EA Sports was willing to pay for their likenesses (it even lobbied the NCAA for such permission) to do so would render any player appearing under his own name ineligible. Virginia Tech player Luther Maddy told CBS Sports' Jon Solomon that he...

Your first look at Agent Locke in Ridley Scott's Halo: Nightfall

The first image from the upcoming Ridley Scott-produced Halo: Nightfall was released this week, introducing the new Spartan Agent Locke. The picture, which was leaked in an accidental post by Variety that has since been taken down, features actor Mike Colter, whose previous work includes roles in The Good Wife and The Following. Colter was previously confirmed as part of the cast; however, while initially the actor was believed to be playing a character called Marlow, sources confirm he's in fact set to play the new Spartan assigned a role in Halo 5: Guardians. Locke will play "a key role in Halo 5: Guardians," general manager and 343 Industries studio head Bonnie Ross said during a Halo-themed meeting at E3 2014. "We're using Halo Nightfall to basically tell his backstory and tell...

Dark Souls 2: Crown of the Sunken King review: return of the king

Dark Souls 2: Crown of the Sunken King blends the old, the new and the even newer to form a mixture that fits perfectly alongside the levels that made the core game so damned good. The first of three downloadable content packs for From Software's action role-playing game grounds players in history by paying homage to the intertwined level design of its forebears. Crown of the Sunken King revisits the past but retains the refined play style of the sequel; it feels about as comfortable as a Souls game can alongside a level of challenge you can't get anywhere else. Most importantly, it introduces a new, puzzle-based exploration formula with great success. Crown of the Sunken King is an indispensable expansion to the Souls franchise. And despite some problems balancing difficulty, it...

Xbox One gets off the ropes with a motivational quote from Rocky (Update)

Xbox One apparently sees itself as the console for the ultimate underdog — Rocky Balboa — in a 30-second YouTube spot it put out Monday. While "Xbox One: Best Games" probably was conceived, created and approved well before last week, it airs at a time when the console is figuratively on the ropes. Despite a hot holiday start, Xbox One has been outsold by its PlayStation 4 rival in North America for the past six months, according to the market research firm NPD. Further, Microsoft just announced the largest round of layoffs in company history, with the closure of the ambitious Xbox One Entertainment division — after little more than a year in operation — among the dismissals. So, here's Rocky Balboa to rally the troops. The quote comes from this scene in 2006's Rocky Balboa, in which...
