The first two pieces of DLC, the Faction Pack and the Chronicles Pack, will expand Last Light's single-player story. The Tower Pack will offer a single-player challenge that 4A said today is designed for Metro...
Microsoft will not allow independent developers to self-publish their games on Xbox One without partnering with Microsoft Studios or a third-party partner, a Microsoft exec told Shacknews at the console's reveal event.
The policy mirrors that of the Xbox Live Arcade platform on Xbox 360, which requires developers to partner with an approved publisher to get a game on the platform — the Xbox Live Indie Games service carries no such requirement, but is also a much less successful storefront for indie game sales. The future of the Indie Games platform is also in limbo, as Microsoft has confirmed that it will release no new versions of its XNA game development toolset, which all Xbox Live Indie Games are developed in.
When asked if the publisher requirement would carry over to Xbox...
Watching violent media as a child is not an accurate predictor of future violent behavior, with genetics and social environment figuring more prominently into personal development, according to a recently-published study from Texas A&M International University.
The study, lead by university chair and associate professor of psychology Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson, suggests genetics is a high-contributing factor to criminal behavior. Data collected from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health showed genetic variance factored into violent behavior for 58 percent of women and 20 percent of men, says the report.
"We basically find that genetics and some social issues combine to predict later adult arrests," Dr. Ferguson said. "Despite ongoing concerns about media influences,...

Crytek confirms the CryEngine 3 will support Microsoft's recently unveiled Xbox One.
The studio announced in an official statement its engine is "already primed for Xbox One development," adding that Crytek technology is "equipped to start creating software for the system now."

A quick look at the highlights among the games coming out in Japan this coming week, courtesy the review pages of Famitsu magazine. Not a very busy week, but one that very oddly features not one, but two Xbox 360 shooters on sale:
Dodonpachi Saidaioujou (9/8/8/8, 33 out of 40 points): Famitsu had a lot of praise for this port, the latest from Cave to hit the Xbox 360. "The 'New Xbox 360' mode features tons of conversation between characters, so there's a lot more of a story element here making things fresh," wrote editor Ranbu Yoshida. "You have 50 missions to try out in HD mode, and there's also strategy video included, which is great. I like the unique stuff you can buy in the shop, too, including AI controls for your ship."
"The stage layouts are largely the same," writer Urara...

Polygon reported in June last year that Neversoft was working content for a Call of Duty title when it announced that it was "ready to push the first-person action genre in support of Activision's Call of Duty franchise."

Kojima Productions developers decided to go through the expense of creating an entirely new engine, the Fox Engine, in order to avoid the limitations of licensed engines, according to an interview with KojiPro developers in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine.
"The control flow and tools we had been using were no longer a match with the times," replied Junji Tago, technical director at KojiPro. "So after Metal Gear Solid 4, we decided to design a tool from scratch that did. With commercial engines, you tend to be bound by the limits of the features already in the engine. We're looking to make something that goes one step beyond normal games, and to make that happen, it's best not to let ourselves be bound by other things as much as possible. That's why, when we thought about it, we...
Xbox Live Gold memberships on Xbox One will be flexible and streamlined, according to Microsoft, allowing console owners to use their Gold account on both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 and letting multiple users share the same account.
"If you have an Xbox Gold membership today for 360 and you buy an Xbox One, your membership applies to both systems," Microsoft's Phil Harrison told Polygon. "You don't have to get another subscription."
Multiple members of a household will be able to share a single account, Harrison said, explaining, "Anybody who has usage privilege on that machine can use it."
Microsoft's Ben Kilgore said that multiple accounts will be able to ride on the same Xbox Live Gold membership, but that individual users will have access to their own friends lists and other...
Xbox One will allow Xbox 360 users to transfer music, movies and television downloads from the Xbox 360 across to the new console, Microsoft's corporate vice president Phil Harrison confirmed with Polygon today.
When asked to clarify if there will be a future backward compatibility solution to bring Xbox 360 games and saves to the Xbox One, Harrison confirmed that games will not but other forms of media will be transferable.
"Actually, to be clear music, movies, television will," Harrison said. "All that comes across. Anything that you've acquired from Xbox Video or Xbox Music will move across."
Harrison attributed a "long architectural technical reason," which he didn't share, when asked to clarify why Xbox Games on Demand and Xbox Live Arcade Games could not transfer across to the...
Xbox 360 controllers will not be compatible with the newly announced Xbox One, Microsoft's corporate vice president Phil Spencer told Polygon at the company's unveiling event in Redmond.
The Xbox 360's controller was introduced in 2005. Along with adding a Guide button, it removed and rearranged several of its predecessor's design elements. Spencer, when asked, said they wouldn't be supported.
Xbox One's controller features 40 design changes, including a thinner analogue stick, a new precision pad, integreated battery compartment and Wi-Fi Direct Radio Stack. The controller does not include a touch screen, share button, near-field communication or biometric sensors like its current competitors.

Xbox 360 Kinect owners had some trouble today watching Microsoft's Xbox One reveal due to device's response to "Xbox" commands spoken during the livestream.
Several users took to Twitter to document their problems, which included pausing, opening Xbox Live or quitting the stream entirely. Polygon's own reviews editor Arthur Gies experienced similar problems with his Kinect while watching the stream.
When the guy on the #XboxReveal stream said "Xbox Live" it activated my Kinect and killed the stream. Good thinking guys.
— Jason Chen (@diskopo) May 21, 2013
Whenever he uses Kinect commands my connect listens and turns off the stream. #xboxreveal Go home Kinect, you're drunk.

@ojko7 it wasn't the stream; it's that my Kinect...

The newly announced Xbox One console will instantly boot up from its rest state, Microsoft confirms.
According to the console maker, the new platform will instantly wake up "so it's always ready when you are." Users can also use the voice command "Xbox On," which will boot up the console and, according to Microsoft, can even turn on the user's TV.
Similarly, console owners can pause and resume games instantly, and both downloads and updates will be out of sight so the user won't need to wait to access other content.
Senior vice president for Microsoft's interactive entertainment business Yusuf Mehdi demonstrated the console's voice command features and during today's reveal. Switching between games, music and television on the platform was shown to take mere seconds using these...

EA previously said that the game is also in development on PlayStation 4. The company gave no release window for the PS4 or Xbox One versions today.
All players who pre-order Battlefield 4 will receive the China Rising expansion pack, which includes four multiplayer maps set in mainland China. The beta will be available this fall; EA has already promised access to anybody who pre-ordered last year's Medal...
Activision shared a behind the scenes video for Call of Duty: Ghosts during Microsoft's Xbox One unveiling event, detailing the development ideology behind the company's next-gen Call of Duty title.
The video above shares more details on the development of the game's plot and characters, as well as information on features new to the franchise such as dynamic maps and the ability to have a dog as a squad mate.
A teaser trailer for the game leaked earlier this morning prior to the Xbox One announcement, but has since been taken down. The full trailer from Microsoft's presentation is available here.
Call of Duty: Ghosts will launch on Nov. 5 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and Windows PC. The game will hit Xbox One at an unspecified date and will receive all downloadable content...
The first unveil video for Xbox One gives a closer look at the console, new Kinect sensor, Xbox One controller and additional features including a personalized homescreen, live TV and Skype.
The latest console is being described as an all-in-one entertainment system that combines gaming, music, films and television which can be switched between through voice recognition and gestures.
This morning, in a tent built atop a soccer field in Redmond, Wash., Microsoft unveiled its newest game console. Unlike rumors suggested, it's called Xbox One. It's Microsoft's latest step in turning its consoles into entertainment hubs, coming at an unspecified price and date later this year.
Like Sony with PlayStation 4 and Nintendo with Wii U, Microsoft is preparing to enter a market much different than the one it did last generation — and for Microsoft, that was eight years ago. This time around, there's new competition from companies like Apple, Valve, Facebook, Samsung, Ouya and many others. It's no longer a question of whether Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo will come out on top, but if traditional game consoles themselves will in the face of a more spread-out market.
