Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is 'the equivalent of four Hollywood movies' says Sledgehammer

Following the disappointment of Call of Duty: Ghosts, a game that retreaded the shooting franchise's familiar themes, Activision knows it must deliver a genuinely fresh blockbuster with this year's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Its development studio Sledgehammer Games is viewed as wielding an opportunity to try something that feels original, without stepping away from the play-style that has made Call of Duty one of the most successful game series' of all time. Sledgehammer, formed in 2009, has been given three years and ample resources to do the job. The team was founded by some of the senior creators behind sci-fi horror shooter Dead Space, and is made up of 225 people from studios as diverse as Valve, Naughty Dog and Crystal Dynamics. According to co-founder Michael Condrey,...

Sherlock Holmes shooting at Watson is just the beginning of this 25 minute gameplay trailer

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments is the latest in the Sherlock Holmes games from developer Frogwares, which have cultivated a loyal following, mostly amongst PC gamers. Those who haven't seen the series before, may be surprised by how polished it looks, rivaling many blockbuster games with larger budgets. The series has a knack for punching above its weight class. This footage begins with a bit of action, the player — inhabiting the role of Watson — dodges bullets, fired by a blindfolded Sherlock Holmes. But from there, the pace of the game slows and the conflict becomes more cerebral. The Sherlock Holmes games are unlike so much of what is released each year; an extended introduction like this is a fine  "test drive" of sorts for what the series has to offer. Sherlock Holmes:...

Pinball FX2 delayed on Xbox One, but you can now transfer tables you bought on Xbox 360

Zen Studios' Pinball FX2 will miss its original Xbox One release date of July 31, but it's for a good reason: Players who purchased tables in the Xbox 360 version of the game will now be able to transfer that content to Xbox One for free, the company announced today. When Zen announced the Xbox One launch date for Pinball FX2 two weeks ago, the company said that it began developing that version of the game in late 2013, and that at that time, Microsoft did not support cross-platform compatibility across Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Zen Pinball 2, the equivalent of Pinball FX2 on non-Xbox platforms, offers cross-buy functionality across PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, so tables purchased on any of the systems can be used in Zen Pinball 2 on all three. Microsoft has changed...

How to fight enemies in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition mixes real-time character combat with a more tactical approach in which players can make use of their party's strategic strengths. This new trailer from developer BioWare shows how the role-playing game's fighting systems work. The game, in which an Inquisitor battles through a fantasy realm, allows players to pile into combat situations while relying on party members to help out, using their particular powers, be they melee, magic or range weapons. Alternatively, the player can freeze the action and control a camera in order to weigh up the enemy, while individually directing party-members. Tactics can be changed at any time. Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released on Nov. 18.

Why Shadow of Mordor's undead Elven hero and sexy Sauron are such a big deal

Monolith Productions revealed that Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's mysterious Wraith character is Celebrimbor, the original forger of the Rings of Power in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. Celebrimbor does not appear in the The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, which means most of Tolkien's modern audience will be introduced to this Elven warrior through the game, not through Tolkien's work. Celebrimbor's time in Tolkien's world occurred long before Thorin and his Company of Dwarves challenged Smaug for Erebor, and his work is directly responsible for Bilbo Baggins being such an excellent burglar due to his use of the one ring. With this one character addition, this one plot point, Monolith Productions has proven the lengths to which they are willing to go to make M...

Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, the feature-length anime film starring Platinum Games' gun-toting witch, is slated to launch in North America on Oct. 21 — and if you're too impatient to wait until then, you can check out the English dub's opening below. The anime, led by Afro Samurai director Fuminori Kizaki and produced by animation studio Gonzo, was first released in Japan last year. The film follows Bayonetta through the events of the original game, a series of battles against angels as she unravels the mystery of her long-forgotten past. The Western version will see Hellena Taylor reprise her role as Bayonetta, as well as most of the game's voice actors returning for their own respective roles. Fans can currently pre-order Bayonetta: Bloody Fate on Blu-ray or DVD for $26.24 through...

Hulk, Tinkerbell and a flying bed make Disney Infinity's 'Toy Box' a whole lot weirder

Disney Infinity 2.0 may still be seen as a kids' game, primarily — but it will also let you put Tinkerbell and The Incredible Hulk in bed together. "That's the bed from Bedknobs and Broomsticks," said John Vignocchi, the game's executive producer, just so we were both clear. It's a vehicle, OK, in Disney Infinity's "Toy Box" mode, where gamers take all of their virtual toys and play with them together, regardless of what continuity or movie or product line they come from. (Bedknobs and Broomsticks was a Mary Poppins clone from 1971 starring Angela Lansbury. It featured a flying bed.) Disney Infinity is the latest money-printer in the toys-to-life genre, in which players bring heroes and other characters into the game by stacking a cool little figurine on a special controller. With...

Battlefield Hardline's single-player tells the story of a good cop framed

Previously ... on Battlefield Hardline: Visceral Games' cop-drama take on Electronic Arts' military shooter franchise was delayed into 2015, mainly over concerns with the online multiplayer experience that just went through a beta in June. What does that mean for the game's single-player story? While extra time is always useful for polishing things, it sounds as though Battlefield Hardline wrapped shooting in May and the story is basically finished. Wendy Calhoun (writer and producer of Nashville, Justified and other TV series) is aboard as a narrative consultant to the story, bringing along Bill Johnson as performance director (whose editing credits include The West Wing, and also Justified). Battlefield Hardline will be the story of a cop who gets framed and goes underground to...

Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom announced, has kind of a Zelda vibe

Jake the Dog and Finn the human are looking very Link-like in this new teaser trailer for Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom, released today at Comic-Con. It definitely has a 2D Zelda vibe, like last year’s Link Between Worlds, with the wacky color palette and character design of the series. Lumpy Space Princess narrates the trailer, which is either a joy to behold or an annoyance, depending on whether you adore the surreal show or not. Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom is due in fall 2014 for Steam, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and 3DS. C’mon grab your friends!

The trailer above shows the famous Justice League in action against Batman's nemesis the Joker and a legion of other baddies hailing from the DC Comics universe. Of course, everything has been given that special Lego games-flavored brand of humor, so while the situation may look dire, it's not too dire for a few silly jokes. In addition to getting hands-on time with the game at Comic-Con this week, attendees of the show can stop by the LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham panel on Sunday, July 27 at 1 p.m. PT and get posters signed by the game's voice actors at 2:30 in the DC Comics booth. Two Ubisoft developers watched a goat sacrifice while researching Far Cry 4

Two Ubisoft developers journeyed to Nepal to research the inspiration for Kyrat, the fictitious Himalayan setting for Far Cry 4, and while there they ended up observing the ritual sacrifice of a goat. The scene plays out in this, part one of a documentary filmed by Vice Media and shown at a Far Cry 4 panel at Comic-Con 2014. It happens off camera at 4:05 but it might make some uncomfortable. Mark Thompson, the game's narrative director, and Phil Fournier, the associate producer, made the journey with Vice's Krishna Andavolu. (Vice and Ubisoft also collaborated on a pirate-history documentary to promote Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.) When they arrived in Kathmandu, they caught a rumor there was to be an animal sacrifice, and they found the event. It was a sacrifice of thanks a man...
