Spelunky unofficially patched with Mac OS X support

go spelunking on Mac

Spelunky, Mossmouth's renowned roguelike platformer, is now playable on Mac OS X, thanks to an unofficial patch from the game's community.

Spelunky fan 'idyll' put up version 1.3 of the game on the TIGSource Forums earlier this month. The patch makes the game playable on Mac OS X, and it took some doing - idyll had to convert the game's source code from Game Maker 8 to Game Maker 7 in order to put together the Mac port, a process that idyll says was "a real pain!" In addition, the Mac version of Game Maker doesn't support gamepads, so you'll have to play Spelunky with a keyboard instead of a controller unless you install an app like ControllerMate.

If you don't want to mess around with any of that, our reviewer loved the Xbox Live Arcade version of Spelunky that was released earlier this year. For more on the game, check out our feature on its two-year journey from freeware game to XBLA.
