"Technical difficulties" are preventing some who pre-ordered Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward at Amazon from receiving a pre-order bonus, according to an official statement from game's publisher, Aksys Games.

Amazon pre-orders were supposed to come with a rubber watch based on an in-game item. On Sept. 24, 2012, Aksys Games announced that the "first wave" of pre-order bonuses had sold out, but that those who had pre-ordered the game before Sept. 17, 2012 would receive the watch. More watches would be available beginning Sept. 28, 2012 with a new "pre-order bonus bundle," and those interested could cancel their existing pre-orders to get the watch with the new bundle.

Last week, Amazon emailed some customers to say that they would not be receiving the watch. Aksys Games responded to the news on its website Friday, writing:

When we began our pre-order bonus promotion, our understanding was that all pre-orders placed before the promotional date would be honored by the system and allow customers to receive the bonus without any additional involvement from either party. However, we were just informed today that technical difficulties arose in the implementation of this conversion, preventing certain customers from getting the pre-order bonus. We sincerely regret and feel for our amazing fans (you) who have waited patiently for this bonus item.

Aksys instructs those with questions to contact Amazon customer service, where a listing for the 3DS pre-order still shows a bonus item. The comment thread for the official statement includes dozens of responses from frustrated pre-orderers, including some who were told by Amazon that nothing could be done.

We have reached out to Amazon and Aksys and will update the story as more information becomes available.
