NFL Films tackles the enduring appeal of Tecmo Bowl in new documentary

Tecmo's celebrated 8-bit Tecmo Bowl football games are the subject of a new episode of NFL Films Presents, a 30-minute documentary episode slated to run on ESPN2 and the NFL Network this week.

NFL Films Presents: Tecmo Super Bowl follows four of the country's premier virtual athletes in the lead up to the the Madison Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament, "the nation's largest and longest-running public Tecmo tourney." The episode also features NFL players who loved the NES classic, like Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez, and those who were featured in it, including former Kansas City Chiefs running back Christian Okoye.

On the official NFL Films blog, bonus footage shows Okoye watching a Tecmo Super Bowl video featuring himself — in sprite form — performing a spectacular feat: "One run, one quarter of play, 75 yards, and around 60 broken tackles."

The episode is scheduled to air four times this week at the following times, all in Eastern time.

  • 10/23 at 12:30am - ESPN2
  • 10/24 at 2:30 pm - ESPN2
  • 10/26 at 4:30 pm - NFL Network
  • 10/27 at 1:30pm - NFL Network
