Three developers have come together to launch a Kickstarter campaign to make six games that will over six months for those who back their project.
Shaun Inman, Rusty Moyher and Matt Grimm are independent developers with titles like The Last Rocket, Super Clew Land and Bloop under their belts. The three developers are asking for $60,000 to launch Retro Game Crunch, a project that will see them prototype a game each month, release the prototype to backers for feedback, and spend the remainder of the month polishing the game. The games will be created in a game jam-like environment where the developers go through three days of "crunch" to get their playable prototypes out the door before accepting feedback and improving their game. At the end of each month, backers of the project receive the polished game for free. The developers intend on doing this for six games over six months.
The developers are also opening the floor to backers to suggest and vote on themes that will determine the kind of games they make. The entire process will also be documented through screenshots, blog posts and podcasts so that backers knew how the developers are progressing.
Pledges begin at $1 for a desktop wallpaper, $15 to receive DRM-free downloads of the first three games for PC or Mac, $25 to receive all six games plus a complete version of Super Clew Land (also DRM-free for PC or Mac) and pledges above $50 receive rewards such as t-shirts, posters, soundtracks and more.
The developers say in their Kickstarter video that the goal of the project is to release the games quickly so that backers don't have to wait months or even years for the games to come to fruition. Funds raised from the Kickstarter campaign will go toward allowing the developers to work on Retro Game Crunch full-time.
The Kickstarter campaign has raised $9,366 at the time of writing with 29 days to go.
