Xbox 360 owners will be able to control what goes on during Spike's Video Game Awards this year by accessing the awards show on Xbox Live and answering poll questions throughout, using Microsoft's SmartGlass app.
Questions will range from what users want to see from host Samuel L. Jackson and what video game premiere is played next, to polls that will gauge what the Xbox 360 audience deem the "coolest" weapon which Jackson will later walk out with, according to VGA executive producer Casey Patterson.
"They will be programming the content they want to see when they want to see it via these questions in real time," he says. "And our host will be in a conversation with them live, which is just unbelievable."
Former VGA hosts from previous award shows, including Jack Black, Zachary Levi, Neil Patrick Harris and Snoop Lion, will join Jackson on stage throughout the night. Both Jack Black and Tenacious D will perform, as well as Linkin Park. Viewers can also expect to see a retrospective of the past decade's video games, as well as a live skits relating to Hobbit director Peter Jackson.
Nominees for Game of the Year include Assassin's Creed 3, Dishonored, Journey, Mass Effect 3 and The Walking Dead: The Game, while a number of new trailers will debut throughout the night.
The 10th annual Spike VGAs, which is currently being called VGA Ten, will in addition be broadcast simultaneously on MTV 2, MTV Tr3s, Spike.com and GameTrailers.com tonight at 9 p.m. ET. Those who wish to participate are encouraged to download the SmartGlass app from Google Play store or the iTunes store prior to broadcast.
