War for the Overworld mixes strategy with god game mechanics

War for the Overworld, a Kickstarter project from Subterranean Games, promises backers a mix of real-time strategy and god game elements inspired by titles such as Dungeon Keeper, Starcraft and Overlord.

As a lord of the underworld, players will gather forces, build dungeons and create traps to destroy would-be heroes attempting to vanquish evil. War for the Overworld includes plans for a main campaign, multiplayer and sandbox mode.

If funded, the game will also include a tool called the Dungeoneer, which will allows players to mod maps, campaigns, assets and new game modes at their discretion. Backers will receive rewards on tiers beginning at £1 and ending with £5,000, with in-game emblems, a digital copy of the final game, access to the beta and the game's soundtrack spread throughout.

The Kickstarter launched on Nov. 29 with a goal of £150,000. At the time of this posting, it currently stands just over £52,000 with more than 2,000 backers.

Funding will come to an end on Jan. 3, 2013. If the goal is reached, War for the Overworld is expected to launch on Aug. 30, 2013 for Windows, Mac and Linux.
