DeNA launches DOT Defender of Texel, 8-bit RPG, on Android and iOS

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 15 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

DOT Defender of Texel, an 8-bit RPG from mobile publisher DeNA, is now available on Android and iOS devices through the company's Mobage platform for social games.

The free-to-play title is set in the world of Texel, whose inhabitants have no concept of death or war, but must be defended by the player from an invasion of robotic animals. DOT's pixelated art style resembles that of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, but opens up the color palette from the 2011 adventure game. (In computer graphics, a "texel" is a texture pixel.)

DOT players will collect rewards from taking down enemy robots, and use the loot to upgrade their characters and gear, as they go on quests and complete boss battles. The mobile title also supports player-versus-player combat.

"This game hits the sweet spot between retro visuals and unexpected delights," said Kenji Kobayashi, executive games director at DeNA.

DOT is available for download from Google Play and the iTunes App Store.
