Mike Pondsmith, co-creator of Cyberpunk 2077, revealed the real-world inspirations behind the game's Night City and thematic choices during a recent video interview with Machinima.
Pondsmith is the creator of pen-and-paper role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020, of which CD Projekt is basing 2077. He is contributing to different aspects of the video game's world and mechanics. According to Pondsmith, Cyberpunk is not about saving humanity, but "about saving yourself."
"In the Cyberpunk world, I realized real soon it was a world where people had the technology, but it didn't fundamentally change the fact there was a lot of treacherous, nasty behavior, large weapons and a lot of serious danger," said Pondsmith. "The important part in Cyberpunk is just that. It's not the technology. It's the feel."
In a recent interview with Polygon, CD Projekt Red said that Cyberpunk 2077 will attempt to stay true to its roots. Players will even be able to print off character sheets and balance stats with pen and paper. More information on the game is expected Feb. 5.
