Club Nintendo accounts can't earn coins for the games they buy through the virtualized Wii on Nintendo's new console, according to an FAQ on Nintendo's website.
"Due to certain system constraints, Club Nintendo accounts cannot be linked to the Wii Shop on the Wii U," the FAQ states. "Games downloaded through the Wii Shop on the Wii U (in Wii mode) do not qualify for surveys or coins."
Although players can transfer the games they've purchased from the Wii to the Wii U and play them in Wii mode, future purchases from the Wii Shop on the Wii U won't earn coins. Because the limitation applies only when buying a game through the Wii Shop on a Wii U, games purchased and surveys taken on a registered Wii will still earn coins. Players can also earn coins by purchasing items through the Nintendo eShop, the Wii U's digital storefront.
By linking an eligible Wii, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS to a Club Nintendo account, Club Nintendo members can redeem the coins they collect for games like Mario Kart 64 and Tetris as well as more tangible items like a Donkey Kong notebook and Wii remote holder. You can check out the available items in the Club Nintendo rewards catalog.
