2013 Global Game Jam expected to break previous attendance records

Global Game Jam, a 48-hour game design event, is expected to break its participant record during the fifth annual event taking place this weekend, organizers announced.

During the Global Game Jam, teams of professional and amateur developers gather to create games based on an announced theme. The event will take place in more than 300 worldwide locations in 60 countries. Game design professional Erin Robinson and Breat Victor will deliver this year's keynote speech.

Polygon reported previously that Microsoft Studios and Imagine Cup will sponsor this year's jam. According to a statement released at the time, the jam is a chance to support creativity and innovation.

Global Game Jam will kick off in New Zealand on Friday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. local time. Other locations will follow suit as they too reach 5 p.m. in their areas. The jam draws to a close in Hawaii on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m.
