Epix video streaming app coming to PS3, PS Vita this year

An app for Epix, the premium television channel and streaming video service, will be available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in the U.S. later this year, Sony announced today.

The app will launch on PS3 in the first quarter of 2013, and will become available on PS Vita this spring.

Epix offers more than 3,000 films including older ones and new releases, as well as concerts, comedy specials, sports and original content. It is a joint venture between three major film studios — Paramount Pictures, MGM and Lionsgate — and films from those companies as well as others often appear first on Epix before they show up on platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Instant Video.

Epix on TV consists of a package of subscription-based premium channels available on a number of cable and satellite providers, including Verizon FiOS, Cox and Dish Network. An Epix app launched on Xbox 360 in December 2011; similar apps are available on devices including iPad, Kindle Fire and Roku. Users are typically offered a trial membership, but must subscribe to Epix through a cable or satellite company in order to continue streaming content through the app.
