NBA 2K14 PS4 gameplay trailer heralds the arrival of next-gen

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 15 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

NBA 2K14 on next-generation consoles got a full trailer from publisher 2K Sports today, showing off gameplay footage from the PlayStation 4 version that makes the game look like a significant leap over the current-generation versions.

Set to Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," which is on the game's soundtrack, the minute-and-a-half-long trailer features NBA 2K14 cover athlete LeBron James as well as Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Andre Iguodala and Anthony Davis. The athletes' faces appear to be climbing out of the uncanny valley, and some impressive lighting effects, cloth physics and sweat are also on display.

Little is known about the content of the next-gen version of NBA 2K14. When 2K Sports announced LeBron as the game's cover athlete this past June, the company said NBA 2K14 on current- and next-gen consoles will be "very unique, independent, distinct experiences from one another." A representative for 2K Sports confirmed to Polygon last month that the major new mode in NBA 2K14, LeBron: Path to Greatness, will not appear in the next-gen versions of the game.

NBA 2K14 will be available at launch on both PS4 and Xbox One. You can check out our full review of the current-gen versions here.
