InXile's upcoming post-apocalyptic role-playing game, Wasteland 2, will feature a 3D map full of "exploration and discovery," producer Montgomery Markland announced via Kickstarter.
Wasteland 2’s world map exploration explained

Wasteland 2 is the sequel to the original 1988 title. According to Markland, the primary form of exploration will take place through maps, though radiation clouds and geography limit travel. As players explore, they’ll discover new settlements, resources and sites.
While exploring, however, players will need to be wary of their surroundings and status. Heading into areas with high radiation will result in radiation poisoning, while forgetting to manage water may end in a player becoming dangerously dehydrated. Wasteland 2 will also feature a random encounter system that makes the threat of murder a very real one.
“Certain parts of The Wasteland are populated by particularly dangerous enemies,” Markland wrote. “You are more likely to trigger high-level encounters while traveling in those areas. We do not conduct any form of level scaling in this regard; so if you wander off the beaten path you better be ready for a tough fight.”
Wasteland 2 is currently in a closed, early beta. Larger access to the beta will be distributed in the near future through Steam.
