Contrast dev diary details inspiration behind film noir look, shadowy mechanics

The latest developer diary for Compulsion Games' Contrast gives viewers a look at the inspiration behind its film noir look and shadow-jumping mechanics — as well as an introduction to the jazz singer behind the silky voice of Didi's mother.

In the video above, director Guillaume Provost, set designer Joshua Mills and visual designer Whitney Clayton walk viewers through the team's thought process, the original idea to shift between 3D and 2D gameplay and how the game lets players tinker with light sources to solve puzzles.

Viewers are also introduced to Laura Ellis, the jazz singer behind the voice of Kat, the mother of protagonist Didi, as well as a handful of other voice actors brought in to bring Contrast to life.

Contrast will launch for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Windows PC on Nov. 15.
