Nintendo 3DS software update adds Miiverse, option to merge 3DS and Wii U eShop balances

A forthcoming system software update to the Nintendo 3DS will bring social networking service Miiverse to the system. The update will also introduce an oft-requested feature, allowing users to combine their Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop balances, in an effort to make buying downloadable software easier.

Nintendo announced the update in a new Nintendo Direct presentation today, explaining that Nintendo Network IDs are coming to 3DS and will be required if users want to combine their eShop balances. Users will need to register their Wii U and 3DS under the same ID. However, 3DS owners will still be able to download software from the eShop without having to log into their Nintendo Network ID.

Nintendo's Bill Trinen said Nintendo "will continue to improve" its offerings related to Nintendo Network ID accounts in order to make signing up more attractive.

The 3DS system software update is expected to be available sometime in December.
