NBA 2K14 connectivity issues that cropped up last week have mostly subsided, although some players are still having problems with certain networked modes in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.
The trouble appeared to begin Dec. 26, when 2K Games customer support representatives said on Twitter that NBA 2K14 developer Visual Concepts was aware of, and investigating, reports of connectivity issues. Problems persisted over the next two days, including periods during which the servers were down entirely.
According to 2K Sports community manager Ronnie Singh, the developers have pushed at least two server-side updates in an effort to fix the problems, one on the night of Dec. 27 and one shortly before 2 a.m. ET today. The most recent update seems to have resolved most of the issues with server connectivity, and Singh apologized for the situation, saying, "Sorry again for the frustrations this weekend, obviously that was an unforeseen circumstance."
However, Singh later acknowledged that some PS4 and Xbox One players are still suffering "temperamental" connections to the MyTeam mode and to private online multiplayer games in Team Up mode. We attempted to load up MyTeam in NBA 2K14 on PS4 this morning, and were presented with the following error message: "The 2KSports Server is not available at this time. Please try again later." (See screencap below.)
In addition, players continue to report all kinds of issues to the 2K Support Twitter account. The problems include game crashes with the PS4 error code "CE-34878-0" upon attempting to play the MyGM and MyCareer modes; a similar crash to the dashboard on Xbox One; visual glitches in the MyCareer loading screen; and the apparent deletion of progress in MyCareer.
We were able to enter MyCareer and MyGM without issue. However, because NBA 2K14 on PS4 and Xbox One constantly checks in with 2K Sports' servers, overall menu navigation was much slower than usual for us. And since the game verifies MyCareer and MyGM progress with the servers, users who want to try playing offline will have to start a separate offline save game for either mode.
Reached for comment, a 2K Sports representative told Polygon, "We are still seeing reports that MyTeam and Team Up aren't working 100 percent of the time but the rest is fixed. Dev is aware of the issue and working to correct it ASAP." Singh said on Twitter shortly before 2 p.m. ET that the Online Association mode in previous-generation NBA 2K14 "should be back up now," and that MyTeam "should be getting back to normal within next few hours."
