PS3 firmware update 4.40 addresses stability issues, adds NFC device support

New, comments

The latest firmware update for the PlayStation 3 console is live today, according to post on the official Japanese PlayStation website.

Update 4.40 is a minor one, but includes two key features. According to PlayStation Japan, the update will improve the stability of the system and add support for the Sony RC-S380, a device that adds near field communication payment capabilities to the device.

The console's previous update moved Trophies to the PlayStation Network category and made those won on the PlayStation Vita visible on the PS3. Trophy viewing was also split into two modes: Online Mode, displaying Trophies synchronized with the server, and Offline Mode, which only displays those saved onto the player's system.

Currently the firmware is only available for download in Japan and is not yet listed on the North American PlayStation website. Polygon has reached out to Sony to ask when Europe and North America can expect the update to be available, and will update this story with more information.

Update: A previous version of this article stated that the Sony RC-S380 added USB and SD card reading capabilities. We have updated the article to reflect the card's NFC capabilities.
