inXile Entertainment announced today that if the studio manages to reach its $3.5 million Kickstarter stretch goal for Torment: Tides of Numenera, renowned game designer Chris Avellone will join the game's design team.
Avellone was lead designer on Planescape Torment, the inspiration behind Torment: Tides of Numenera. He later co-founded Obsidian Entertainment, where he is the creative director, and was lead designer on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. When inXile's Kickstarter campaign for Wasteland 2 was successfully funded last year, Avellone joined the team to help write and design the game.
According to inXile, if Tides of Numenera's stretch goal is reached, Avellone will come on board the project with two primary goals: to review and provide feedback on the creative elements of the game, including story, characters and areas, and to design and write an eighth companion for the game.
inXile wrote in a statement that Avellone's work with Tides of Numenera will not interfere with his involvement with Obsidian's Project Eternity, which is another project that was successfully funded through Kickstarter.
Torment: Tides of Numenera has raised $2,896,942 at the time of writing with 14 days to go. The campaign originally asked for $900,000. It became the fastest project in Kickstarter history to reach $1 million in funding.
