EA DICE to experiment with Oculus Rift headset in its Frostbite engine

New, comments

EA DICE will be experimenting with the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset in its Frostbite engine, according to an email from Frank Vitz, creative director of the Frostbite Development Team, published on MTBS3D.

"I am really eager to see how the Oculus Rift works with Frostbite," Vitz wrote of the engine that will power the next Mass Effect game and Dragon Age 3: Inquisition.

In an email reply to MTBS3D's Neil Schneider, Vitz wrote that he expects to receive a prototype hardware kit soon and that there are "at least four kits on order" and an "internal community eager to work on it." Although Vitz can imagine stereoscopic 3D working well with Battlefield 3, DICE is exploring the possibilities, not promising compatibility at this point.

Other games that have offered support for the Oculus Rift include the mech-driven shooter Hawken and id Software's Doom 4. The Kickstarter-funded 3D headset is expected to begin shipping this month. You can see Joshua Topolsky, The Verge's editor-in-chief, try the headset out on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon here.
