Disney's Planes game based on upcoming animated film coming to Nintendo consoles

Disney's Planes, a game based on the upcoming animated film of the same name, is coming to Nintendo platforms, Nintendo announced today.

The Disney's Planes will launch on Wii U, Wii, Nintendo 3DS and DS on Aug. 6 in North America and Aug. 16 in the U.K.

A representative from Disney confirmed to Polygon that the console versions are being developed by Behaviour Interactive, while the handheld versions are by Tose Company.

According to Nintendo, the game will add onto the storyline of Disney's film, allowing players to control the film's characters and "enjoy the thrill of flight" across six environments from the movie in more than 40 missions. The flying-based game will star movie protagonist Dusty, a "big-hearted, speed-loving" crop duster, voiced by Dane Cook, who is hungry for adventure.

On console players can play as one of 10 characters from the movie, while handheld versions will offer the choice of six. The Wii U and Wii versions will include drop-in and drop-out two-player multiplayer. Players can play through a single-player Story mode a handful of score-based minigames in all versions, including a Balloon Popping mode. Wii U and Wii will have two exclusive modes, an exploratory "Free Flight" mode and the racing mode Air Rallies. 3DS and DS gamers will have access to an exclusive Challenge mode as well.

Disney's Planes will open in theaters on Aug. 9. The film is a spin-off of Pixar's Cars movies and is being produced by DisneyToon Studios with Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter serving as one of the producers.
