The Wii U Virtual Console will launch alongside eight classic games, Nintendo announced today on the official Wii U Facebook page and confirmed with Polygon.
Players who boot up the Virtual Console for the first time will have their choice of the following Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System titles:
- Balloon Fight (NES)
- Donkey Kong Jr. (NES)
- Excitebike (NES)
- F-Zero (SNES)
- Ice Climber (NES)
- Kirby's Adventure (NES)
- Punch-Out!! (NES)
- Super Mario World (SNES)
Nintendo has also posted a gallery of screenshots for these games on the Wii U page. A sizzle reel released last week for the Virtual Console also shows Super Metroid, Wrecking Crew and Yoshi's Cookie, which could likely hit the platform at a later date.
The Wii U Virtual Console is expected to launch soon after an upcoming system update that will decrease the console's load times, allow users to copy and move data between USB devices, boot up the console in Wii Mode and have software download in the background while playing games.
