Lost Planet 3 features a suite of four multiplayer modes that are separate from the solo story campaign, and Capcom revealed two of them, Scenario and Akrid Survival, today in a Capcom-Unity video interview with producer Andrew Szymanski.
In general, Lost Planet 3's multiplayer concerns two opposing factions, the Snow Pirates and the Neo Venus Construction Company (NEVEC). The Scenario mode is an objective-based affair, with different goals for both sides on each of the game's six maps. In the video above, Capcom showed off Scenario on the Stronghold map. NEVEC players are the attackers with the objective of protecting their Battlecat, a massive machine that's drilling into the Snow Pirates' base; the Snow Pirates must fend them off and try to disable the Battlecat. Other maps will let players duke it out in Battle Suits, Lost Planet 3's mechs.
The other mode Capcom debuted today, Akrid Survival, is a 3-on-3 game type. Each human team faces waves of Akrid in its own cordoned-off space, and once the creatures are defeated, the barrier between the areas is removed and the teams have to take each other out. Szymanski made it clear that the Lost Planet series' traditional grappling hook will play a much bigger role in multiplayer than in the campaign. Check out our most recent preview for more details on the origins of the grappling hook.
Lost Planet 3 launches Aug. 27 on Windows PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
