Grand Theft Auto 5 trailers delve into protagonists Michael, Franklin and Trevor

The newest Grand Theft Auto 5 trailers, released today by publisher Rockstar Games, give us a closer look at the game's three protagonists, Michael, Franklin and Trevor.

Rockstar first revealed last December that Grand Theft Auto 5 features three different playable characters, and then introduced the men in the game's second trailer. Michael, the oldest of the group, is a middle-aged former bank robber whose family is driving him crazy. Franklin works for a business that repossesses cars. Trevor, an old friend of Michael's, is a loose cannon.

Grand Theft Auto 5 takes place in the Los Angeles analog Los Santos, one of the three cities in 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, although Rockstar said the new Los Santos is bigger than the game worlds of San Andreas, 2008's Grand Theft Auto 4 and 2010's Red Dead Redemption combined.

Earlier this year, Rockstar delayed Grand Theft Auto 5 from its planned spring 2013 launch; the open-world game is now set for release Sept. 17 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. You can check out its cover art, which highlights Franklin, Trevor and Michael, here.
