Destiny concept art reveals the frontier of human civilization

Destiny developer Bungie released a few new pieces of concept art yesterday, providing a glimpse at the desolate regions beyond the extent of what's left of human civilization.

A catastrophic event wiped out all but a few humans, and the survivors remain confined to the City, the last remaining settlement on Earth. There they live in the shadow of the Traveler, a giant, protective sphere floating above them.

Outside the City lies everything that was abandoned when the population moved into the City, settlements like Old Russia that have been overtaken by nature and humanity's enemies. People also attempted to explore the Moon, but those missions proved too dangerous, and the satellite has since been labeled a Forbidden Zone.

See the concept art above, and then check out our write-up of the talk that design director Christopher Barrett gave at the 2013 Game Developers Conference, in which he detailed the process of bringing together fantasy and science fiction influences to create a "mythic sci-fi world."

Destiny is set for release in 2014 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
