Mobile Watch List - Star Command, Angry Birds Friends and Heads Up

Russ Frushtick is the director of special projects, and he has been covering the world of video games and technology for over 15 years. He co-founded Polygon in 2012.

This week on the Mobile Watch List heralds the arrival of the long-awaited and much-anticipated Kickstarter success, Star Command. Oh yes, and more Angry Birds and a game brought to you by Ellen.

Star Command (iOS, Coming soon to Android)

After two successful Kickstarter campaigns, Star Command is finally out on iOS. And, I'm sorry to say, it needs a lot of work. There's plenty of promise here, as the graphics and style of the game look quite sound, but the release is bogged down by control issues and a serious lack of gameplay diversity. It's possible that, with updates, the game will grow into something greater, but right now it's just not there.

Angry Birds Friends (iOS, Android)

While all of the Angry Birds games have leaderboards built in, Angry Birds Friends is the first in the bunch to make those leaderboards the focus. In this free-to-play release, you're battling Facebook friends for bird supremacy.

Heads Up (iOS)

For some strange reason, Ellen (yes, that Ellen) teamed up with a mobile developer to release what is essentially Taboo on iPhone. But, in a shocking twist, it's actually incredibly well implemented and super clever. Who knew Ellen was such a taste maker?
