Warframe's PlayStation 4 trailer introduces the game's story and exo-skeletons

Following yesterday's news that Warframe, Digital Extremes' free-to-play cooperative third-person shooter will be a PlayStation 4 launch title, Sony Computer Entertainment has released a trailer introducing the game's story and core characters.

In Warframe, gamers play as an endangered race called the Tenno who are equipped with upgradeable exo-skeletons known as Warframes. Using the Warframes, the Tenno must battle for survival against three other races: Grineer, Corpus and Infected.

There are 13 different Warframes in the Windows PC version, ranging from Saryn and her venomous attacks to Vauban and his powers that can create crushing traps.

On the PlayStation Blog, project lead Steve Sinclair provided further details on how the game will use the DualShock 4's touch screen. "Right now, we're using the touch pad to activate your crazy Warframe powers on the run with a flick of your thumb or finger," he wrote. "Want to lunge and smash with your Rhino Warframe? Swipe your thumb up on the touch pad and you'll charge like a battering ram into a group of helpless enemies."

Warframe will also have an Alerts system via a companion app, where players will receive updates throughout the day about "missions of opportunity," Sinclair wrote. "To get these notifications when you're away from the system, we have created an iOS and Android Companion App called the Warframe Nexus. Players can customize their alert settings to show them only the missions and rewards they're interested in, and while it's very useful, it's only the beginning for the Nexus."

Warframe was first announced for Windows PC in early 2012 and entered closed beta in October 2012, with the open beta beginning March 21. Warframe is currently available for Windows PC and Steam.

A hands-on demo of Warframe will be available at E3 2013, where Polygon will be reporting live to bring you all the news.
