Xbox Live Gold members will receive Hidden Path Entertainment's tower defense game, Defense Grid: The Awakening, for free from July 1-15 as part of Microsoft's Games with Gold promotion, according to a post on the Major Nelson blog.
Xbox Live ‘Games with Gold’ offering Defense Grid: The Awakening for free
Announced during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, the promotion offers Xbox Live Gold members two free Xbox 360 games per month until the end of the year. Each game will be free to download for a half-month period beginning on the 1st and the 16th of the month.
The promotion's first free game was Fable 3, which was available from June 10-30. On top of the Games with Gold offer, the Xbox Live Ultimate Game Sale kicks off this week with 32 titles discounted over seven days on the Xbox Live Marketplace.
Defense Grid: The Awakening, which you can see in action in the video above, launched on Windows PC on Dec. 8, 2008, Xbox Live Arcade on Sept. 2, 2009, for 800 Microsoft Points and Mac OS X on July 7, 2010. Hidden Path is currently working on Defense Grid 2, which will be available for Windows PC and Mac, and maybe mobile devices, in approximately a year. Update: Microsoft spokesperson Major Nelson took to Twitter this morning to clarify that Assassin’s Creed 2 and Halo 3, two games mentioned by name for the promotion by Yusuf Mehdi during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, were never actually given release dates.
