The Staples Center in Los Angeles will host the final event for the League of Legends Season 3 World Championship on Oct. 4, developer Riot Games announced today.
It's a notable step up from last year's event, which was held at the Galen Center on the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles. The Staples Center's capacity ranges from approximately 18,000 to 21,000 depending on the event, and it's the home of four professional sports franchises: the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. It has played host to seven NBA Finals series and one Stanley Cup Finals series.
The World Championship final will decide the winner of a months-long season of competitive play in League of Legends. Regional qualifying events will begin Aug. 17 and the 14-team World Playoff will start Sept. 16, with the semifinals set to take place at the Galen Center. The winning team will take home the Summoner's Cup and $1 million, out of the total global prize pool for Season 3 of $8 million.
