The developer of free-to-play fighting game Tekken Revolution posted a poll to the game's Facebook page today, asking fans which "unique new characters" they'd like to see added to the PlayStation 3 title. The list excludes well-known Tekken faces in lieu of some very bizarre new additions, like an egg-spewing fish.
Namco Bandai's Tekken Revolution poll lists 10 characters that have "existed previously in our undisclosed story setting materials, but have never made it into the game, or other unique ideas for characters that were proposed but never actually created."
The proposed characters include gender-swapped takes on existing Tekken characters, like a female version of Paul Phoenix ("For some inexplicable reason, Paul is transformed into a girl, but the appearance is of a very cute girl") and Ganmi-chan, a female sumo wrestler who idolizes Ganryu.
Some of the ideas come from background characters. Tougou and "Sexy Female Tekken Force Character" are both inspired by Tekken Force mode, and Shin Kamiya is a classmate of Jin Kazama who appeared in the 3D CG movie Tekken: Blood Vengeance.
Others are more off the wall, such as a zombie bride, a fireball-tossing vampire, a giant praying mantis and a salmon. Namco explains:
Originally planned for Tekken 3, punch buttons would cause the Salmon to flop around, and the kick buttons would make it release eggs, which was quite an idea at the time. However, arcades were still popular worldwide, and charging 100 yen (1 USD) per play with such a character was likely to be a problem. That, and the fact that character would be always be the target of Kuma, lead to the concept being scrapped. If, for some unforeseen reason, this character is actually chosen, development may be quite difficult.
Offsetting that abundant quirkiness is the Average, Run-of-the-Mill Old Man, described as weak and lacking in martial arts skills. A rundown of the 10 proposed characters can be viewed at the official Tekken Revolution website.
The poll is open through July 14. The three finalists will receive concept designs from the Tekken team, with the winner decided and announced at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 19 during a panel. Polygon will be in attendance to let you know if the salmon emerged victorious.
