EVO Japan can still happen, says tournament founder

Founders of the Evolution Championship Series fighting games tournament say a Japan-based event can still happen, reports Shoryuken.

Speaking during a special Japanese Nico Nico livestream following the Evo 2013 finals yesterday, one of the tournament's founders, Joey "MrWizard" Cuellar, along with Mad Catz community manager Mark Julio, said Evo Japan could happen as early as next year and has not been forgotten.

At Evo 2010, tournament organizers announced Evo vs Godsgarden, the official spin-off fighting games tournament for Japan, and set the dates for May 6 and 7, 2011. However, due to the Tohoku earthquake and following tsunami that spring, the tournament was postponed indefinitely.

Evo 2013 wrapped up yesterday, with contestant DM MCZ Xian winning the Super Street Fighter 4 world championships during the tournament's grand finals. The competition took place in Las Vegas from Friday, July 12 until Sunday, July 14.
