Disney Research is currently working on haptic technology called "Aireal" that allows users to feel virtual objects via puffs of air, New Scientist reports.
The system works with the use of a depth camera and whatever game or application that's present. It then directs small, donut-ringed bursts of air into the space where virtual objects are presented. The system can reportedly combine multiple Aireals for a more advanced simulation; in one instance, a player was able to "feel" the air from seagulls flapping around his head.
