Grand Theft Auto 5 achievements are mostly spoiler-free, but point to surprises

Rockstar Games' previews of Grand Theft Auto 5's incredibly wide variety of activities imply that players will be able to do just about anything in the next open-world crime epic. A listing of the game's Xbox 360 achievements further reinforces the intriguing possibilities of GTA 5. And while those achievements mostly steer clear of key story spoilers, some of the game's achievements might ruin a surprise or two.

But on the other hand, they may also offer even more compelling reasons to explore the city of Los Santos. (Consider yourself warned.)

Some of the achievements are tied to the purchase of real estate and businesses. Another, "Trading Pure Alpha," rewards players who invest in the game's stock market simulation. Arguably the most interesting of the bunch is "From Beyond the Stars," an achievement for collecting "all spaceship parts" — a reference to a mission in Rockstar's Bully, perhaps? Or something more?

More than a third of Grand Theft Auto 5's achievements are tied to Grand Theft Auto Online, meaning many players won't be able to make a substantial dent in racking up gamerscore or trophies until Oct. 1, when online multiplayer goes live.

GTA 5 will come to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on Sept. 17.
