Battlefield 4 getting new Obliteration mode, new map revealed

Battlefield 4 will include a new, bomb-infused multiplayer mode called Obliteration and a seaside map called Paracel Storm, EA announced today at its Gamescom 2013 press conference.

Using the game's "levolution" technology, which is powered by the Frostbite 3 engine and can be seen in the destructible multiplayer environments like those we went hands-on with at E3 2013, no two games are the same, the developer said.

A new mode called Obliteration tasks players with destroying an enemy base before they destroy yours. Both teams fight to secure a single, randomly generated bomb. Obliteration will be playable at Gamescom.

A new map called Paracel Storm is set in the South China Sea. It will include a mixture of air, land and sea-based combat, whose destruction was shown in a video on stage that you can watch below.

Battlefield 4's beta will launch in early October, and the game is set to launch Oct. 29 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC with next-gen console versions to follow. Check out Polygon's EA Gamescom 2013 StoryStream for more on the company's upcoming games.
