The Witcher board game is coming out in 2014

A board game based on the universe of The Witcher will be available to purchase next year, alongside the release of a version for iPad devices, CD Projekt Red's Marek Ziemak told Polygon.

A prototype of the board game was revealed at this week's Gamescom event in Germany, pictures of which you can see above. The Witcher: Adventure Game is developed by Ignacy Trzewiczek, a popular Polish board game designer who previously worked on the board game title Stronghold. This is the first time CD Projekt Red has revealed the board game was in development.

The Witcher: Adventure Game allows between two-to-four players, with gameplay revolving around cards, dice and coins. Players take on specific roles, which include a playable Geralt and Triss Merigold, and are tasked with combatting enemies from the Witcher universe: Trolls, Nidhogg, Frighteners, Griffins, Kikimores and Leshens, among others. The latter enemy-type will be introduced for the first time in the upcoming The Witcher 3.

For now, all details about the game's ruleset and structure are being kept under wraps, as is its exact release date. You can have a look at the board game itself in the gallery above, however.
