A new dev diary for Volition's Saints Row 4 discusses the particular narrative excesses of the game's story.
Some time after the third Saints Row title, the Saints' leader becomes a respected national hero and eventually is elected President, but aliens of the Zin empire attack and take the Saints captive. From there, they put the player character and the other Saints into a virtual-reality recreation of Steelport in order to brainwash them into doing their bidding.
"But unbeknownst to Zinyak, you're a psychopath," says senior producer Jim Boone. "You don't really play by his rules, and you rebel against him. So you break out of this simulation; you have to work to get your allies and ultimately take the fight to Zinyak."
The video showcases some of the things that the virtual reality of the simulated world enables the developers to include like superpowers and ridiculous weaponry. The video also shows what appears to be a space-shooter section, presumably when the player is confronting the Zin forces directly.
Saints Row 4 hits Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC on Aug. 20.
