Microsoft's Illumiroom Xbox projector is too expensive to bring to your living room

Last year, Microsoft introduced an early proof-of-concept for its Xbox augmented reality projector IllumiRoom, new tech that could feasibly expand content from your Xbox consoles onto your living room walls; Unfortunately, IllumiRoom is now being described as "just research" that is too expensive to release to the public, Xbox One head of product planning Albert Penello told AusGamers.

"I wouldn't expect you'll see that," said Penello. "It's really super-neat if you're in the lab and you've got Microsoft money and you could totally set up this awesome lab, but... we looked at it, but for an average customer it's, like, thousands of dollars [for the set up]."

IllumiRoom was revealed during Samsung CES keynote earlier in the year in a new video that shows off a prototype that uses a Kinect for Windows camera in addition to a projector in order to expand content on-screen across to the surrounding walls. There was no mention of IllumiRoom during the Xbox One event at this year's E3.
