Pokemon X and Y gets Mega forms of original starters, cloud-based Pokemon Bank app

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will see the return of classic partner Pokemon Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, it was announced during today's Nintendo Direct.

The chosen Pokemon will later be able to Mega Evolve in battle once the player has evolved it into Venusaur, Charizard or Blastoise and obtained its individual Mega Stone. Nintendo also confirmed that in order to Mega Evolve Pokemon, players need to obtain an in-game bracelet called the Mega Ring which holds a Key Stone that triggers the evolution of the Pokemon.

Game Freak director Junichi Masuda announced the new Nintendo 3DS app and service Pokemon Bank, which allows players who own Pokemon X and Pokemon Y to store up to 3,000 of their Pokemon online. The new Pokemon Bank lets you store and deposit up to 100 boxes worth of Pokemon, in addition to boxes already made available in the two upcoming titles. By using the bank, players can deposit and withdraw Pokemon from multiple copies of X and Y, and additionally players can transfer Pokemon from other copies of the game.

Those who activate Pokemon Bank will be able to use the Poke Transporter app, which simplifies the transfer process of Pokemon caught in Pokemon Black Version, White Version and their respective sequels. Pokemon Bank will be available in North America via Nintendo eShop, and will feature a free trial period at a later date.

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y launches on Oct. 12 for Nintendo 3DS.
