Namco Bandai launches Wonder Momo teaser site

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 15 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

Namco Bandai is planning something related to the 8-bit game Wonder Momo, although it's unclear what that might be, according to a new teaser site from the publisher.

The simple teaser site features a silhouette of Momo and the phrase "Momo is back." The publisher's ShiftyLook division has been running a Wonder Momo web comic produced in partnership with Udon Entertainment for more than a year.

Wonder Momo has never been available outside of Japan. The game was originally released in Japanese arcades in 1987 and was ported to PC-Engine (known as the TurboGrafx-16 in North America) in 1989. Both versions are available on the Japanese Wii Virtual Console.

Namco developed and published the side-scrolling beat-'em-up, whose title character is a young girl who gets super powers. Wonder Momo takes place on the set of a TV show, with players taking the role of the actress who stars as Momo.

The teaser site has a Japanese URL, and it's unclear if Namco Bandai's new plans for Momo will include global releases. We've reached out to Namco Bandai for more details, and will update this article with any information we receive.
