More than 4.2 million PlayStation 4s sold in 2013, Sony says

The PlayStation 4 has sold more than 4.2 million units since its launch last November, Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House announced at CES today.

The cumulative sales figure, as of Dec. 28, puts Sony well on its way to hitting or exceeding its target of 5 million PS4s sold by March 2014, the end of the company's current fiscal year. At launch, Sony announced it had sold more than 1 million PS4 consoles on launch day.

"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network," Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said in a prepared statement. "After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014."

The company also announced that they've sold more than 9.7 million pieces of PS4 software through the "holiday season," worldwide, counting both retail stores and their PlayStation Store.

Earlier this week, Sony's chief console competitor Microsoft announced it had sold more than 3 million Xbox One consoles worldwide.
