Check out the first trailer for Sony's 'Powers' TV series

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 15 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

The debut trailer for Powers premiered during a panel for the show at New York Comic Con yesterday, offering a glimpse of the varied cast of characters that live in the series' version of Chicago.

Powers is based on the Icon Comics graphic novel series of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. It will be the first show in Sony's slate of original programming for PlayStation Network users. Powers centers on Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley, District 9) and Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward, The Following), two Chicago homicide detectives who deal specifically with cases involving "powers" — people with super powers.

The trailer doesn't show off much in the way of the abilities themselves, but according to the panelists — Bendis, Oeming and multiple members of the cast — Powers is being made right now, with production currently under way on the third episode. Also featured in the trailer are Wolfe (Eddie Izzard, The Riches), Johnny Royale (Noah Taylor, Almost Famous), Retro Girl (Michelle Forbes, True Blood), Captain Cross (Adam Godley, Breaking Bad), Zora (Logan Browning, Meet the Browns) and Calista (Olesya Rulin, High School Musical).

The first season of Powers, which will contain 10 episodes, is set to premiere in December. The pilot will be free to all PlayStation customers, while the entire season will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers. We'll have more later on Powers' NYCC 2014 panel, but for now, you can check out four still images from the show below.
