Mortal Kombat X's character roster continues to grow, with the latest addition consisting of the scheming sorcerer Quan Chi, publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today.
Quan Chi debuted not in a Mortal Kombat video game, but in the 1996 animated television series Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm. The devious sorcerer, a longtime villain of the franchise, hails from the Netherrealm. Just like all characters in Mortal Kombat X, Quan Chi will come with three variations. As a Sorcerer, he can use spells in combat; as a Warlock, he can open portals to hurt an opponent from afar; and as a Summoner, he can call forth a creature from the underworld to assist him in battle.
Quan Chi "plays a major part in the [Mortal Kombat X] story," said executive producer Shaun Himmerick in a trailer for the character. You can watch the video, which contains about a minute and a half of gameplay footage of a match between Quan Chi and Kano, above. So far, Warner Bros. and Mortal Kombat X developer NetherRealm Studios have announced those two characters, along with returning favorites Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden; new combatants Cassie Cage, D'Vorah, Ferra/Torr and Kotal Kahn; and Goro, who is exclusive to pre-order customers.
Mortal Kombat X is set for release April 14, 2015, almost four years to the day after the previous entry in the franchise, 2011's Mortal Kombat. The game is in development on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. For more, check out our in-depth E3 coverage.
