The chances of a new Darkstalkers game aren't looking good

Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono has been teasing a new game in the Darkstalkers fighting game franchise for years, in part to rally support for the game that he has called his dream project. But despite Ono's wishes, the odds that we'll get a Darkstalkers 4 aren't looking great.

Ono has said he'd "love to make a new Darkstalkers more than anything," if he was given the resources. But in a recent interview with Famitsu, translated by EventHubs, Ono said that due to sales of the most recent release, Darkstalkers Resurrection, a proper sequel won't be happening for the time being.

"We won't be releasing a new installment in the Darkstalkers series anytime soon," Ono said in translated comments. "as we didn't manage to hit our sales targets for Darkstalkers Resurrection..." When pushed for a sequel, Ono joked that the interviewer would have to buy some 4 million copies of Resurrection for a new Darkstalkers game to happen.

Capcom released Iron Galaxy Studios' Darkstalkers Resurrection for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March 2013. The fighting game compilation, which featured arcade games Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge and Darkstalkers 3, didn't sell as well as Capcom had hoped.

"I'm disappointed in the opening sales response relative to any other fighting title we've put out on the same platforms given the frequency and urgency of requests we've had here over the last several years and the quality of the execution," then Capcom U.S. senior VP Christian Svensson said at the time. "It is the most fully featured and probably best project of this type we've done."
