Blizzard offers free World of Warcraft time following expansion launch problems

New, 21 comments

It was a tough weekend for many World of Warcraft subscribers eager to play the new Warlords of Draenor expansion pack, but Blizzard is hoping to make up for the problems by offering free game time.

The news comes straight from World of Warcraft executive producer J. Allan Brack in a post on the game's official forums:

In recognition of the difficulties so many of you ran into when trying to play over the first few days, we're adding five days’ worth of extra time to every subscription in the Americas, Oceania, and Europe that was active as of Friday, November 14. Things are already in a much better place than they were going into the weekend, so I hope you’ll now be able to focus on having a ton of fun with this expansion.

Brack expressed excitement over how much players seem to be enjoying Warlords of Draenor but said that its quality "does not excuse the subpar launch experience we delivered."

When Warlords of Draenor went live late last week, new and returning players flooded Blizzard's servers, creating long queues that players had to wait in before they could actually get in the game. On top of that, Blizzard revealed that it was suffering from a DDOS attack, which led to lag and other problems even once players were logged on.

In his post, Brack said Blizzard has addressed these problems by expanding its instancing technology, which "will result in approximately double the prelaunch capacity on each realm." This should reduce or even get rid of queue times on even high-population servers.

"I also hope you'll accept our apology and keep your faith in us," Brack said. "We love World of Warcraft, and we're very proud of this expansion, so stumbling out of the gates like this was very disappointing for all of us."

Frustrations with the long waits to get into World of Warcraft spilled out into other parts of the internet this weekend, when a Reddit moderator chose to shut down the main World of Warcraft subreddit in protest of the problems.
