Smash Bros. is fastest selling Wii U title in US, but lots of work left to do, Nintendo says

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold 490,000 physical and digital copies during the first three days it was out in the U.S., making it the fastest selling game for the console in this country, Nintendo announced this morning.

The game hit the U.S. on Nov. 21. It hits Europe on Nov. 28, Australia Nov. 29 and Japan Dec. 6.

Smash dethrones Mario Kart 8. While Nintendo never released U.S. only sales for the first three days of the racer's release, the company did announce it the the fastest selling game in the console's history in June. At the time they said it had sold more than 1.2 million copies worldwide since its May 29 release in Japan and May 30 release in North America and Europe. Just last month, Nintendo sales figures showed that nearly half of all Wii U owners also owned the game.

The Smash Bros. franchise has sold more than 14 million games in the U.S. alone, according to the company and the metacritic score of 93 the game earned makes it the highest-rated original game of this generation.

Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing called the hit a "great start."

"But there's a lot of work left to do and a few more surprises in store for our fans," he said in a prepared statement. "With great deals coming on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and great content like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launching next week, Nintendo will offer shoppers the best combination of fun and value this holiday season."

To date, very few retailers are offering discounts or sales for Wii U games or consoles. In compiling our Black Friday deals and sales charts, I've only found four discounts for Wii U bundles. You can see them right here.
