Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed the cast of its movie based on DC Comics' Suicide Squad today, announcing that Jared Leto will play The Joker and Will Smith will play Deadshot in the 2016 film.
The confirmed cast also includes Margot Robbie, who will play Harley Quinn; Tom Hardy, who will return to the DC universe as Rick Flagg (not Bane); Jai Courtney as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. According to Variety, Jesse Eisenberg, who will portray Lex Luthor in next year's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, will also appear.
The Suicide Squad team is comprised of DC supervillains who undertake high-risk covert operations for the U.S. government for a shot at commuted prison sentences.
David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch) is attached to write and direct the film, which opens Aug. 5, 2016.
Suicide Squad is one of 10 movies based on DC Comics characters that Warner Bros. has planned to hit theaters by 2020. Warner announced its extended comic book movie slate, which also includes films based on Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman, in October.
